Sights and Sounds of Paris, 1880s

An ad for the theatre Folies Bergere from artist Jules Cheret in 1880.  Dot dreams of being a Follie girl.  This was the most popular place to go for music and dancing, as the Moulin Rouge was not built until 1889.   source

A folding map of Paris, France.  Dated 1880.    This was seen as the most accurate map to date , characters of the play might have used it, perhaps the Americans visiting.
An etching by artist Maxime Lalanne of Boulevard Montmartre, a famous street in Paris,France.   source
Poster advertising an Electro-Medical body massage and stimulation machine, cira Paris, 1884.  It might be interesting to know how ads looked at the time.

Photo of the he Monet and Hoschede families, c.1880s.  Interesting example of fashion of the time.

Photo of people outside the Observatory Fountain Luxembourg Gardens, c. 1880s
Great source of people in common clothes of the time, as many people of the show would wear

Claude Monet, Woman with a Parasol (1886)
An example of the popular art form of the time, impressionism.  An art form George Seurat was trying to break away from.

Pierre Auguste Renoir, Umbrellas (1886)
Another example of impressionism.

Auguste Rodin, Awakening (1884)
Another art form popular of the time was sculpture.  Dot mentions this in the opening song from the show.  Once can live on forever being made up out of "marble, granite, bronze, durable."  Rodin was the be-all-end-all sculpture at the time.

Emile Paladihe French opera, Patrie! (1886)
A French opera of the time.Although not famous, it did premier in Paris, France during the time the play is set.  This recording is of Titta Ruffoo in 1920.

Alfred Sisley, Brücke von Moret im Sommer (1888)
Another painting of the time set in the exact park in which the musical is set.  Which I have come to learn is the square Alfred Sisley, a small public park on the Île de la Jatte.

What is left of the park the painting and musical is based on.  Very fascinating website of a photographer/tourist who has a lot of pictures of famous places throughout Paris.
