Seurat and “La Grande Jatte” by Daniel Catton Rich

Library Call Number: ND553.S5R5

·         Great book about Suerat and the painting itself has some great in progress sketches of the painting.  Relevant to the show because throughout the first act of the show you see George sketching stuff in his sketchbook, reference drawings are in this book.  Also knowing about the painting itself is important too.

 

The History of Fashion in France by Mrs. Cashel Hoey and Mr. John Lillie

 Library Call Number:  GT850.C52

·         Primary source of costumes concentrating on France, has some great color sketches in the back.  Important to get a look at the fashion as it was drawn by the people at the time.

 

Nineteenth Century Fashion by Penelope Byde

Library Call Number:  GT737.B96

·         Has photographs and sketches of both woman’s and men’s costumes for the time of the play.  To get a general overview of the fashion at the time is important. 

 

Victorian Fashions & Costumes From Harper’s Bazar 1867-1898, edited and introduced by Stella Blum

Library Call Number:  GT595.B56

·         Primary source.  Many, many illustrations of woman’s fashion of the time.  Great resource to find inspiration for Dot’s opening dress that opens in the front.

 

A History of Private Lives From the Fires of Revolution to the Great War by Michelle Perrot

Library Call Number:  GT2400.H5713

·         A great in depth look of the way people lived their lives in that time period.  Has many photographs as well as paintings and illustrations.  A great book, highly recommended!  If you want to find out how regular people as well as the rich spent their days, this is the book to read.
